What is the Fortore Valley Ecomuseum

A museum without walls, a territory that tells its own story

The Fortore Valley Ecomuseum is a diffuse museum that lives in the villages, landscapes, knowledge and traditions of the communities of the Area Interna Fortore, in Molise. It is not a traditional museum, closed in physical spaces, but a collective path of knowledge, memory and participationin which the territory itself becomes a heritage to be experienced and valued.

It is a cultural, educational and identity project, which recognises the community as protagonistactive guardian of its history and promoter of a new way of understanding heritage, where tangible and intangible assets, nature and culture, past and future coexist.

History of the project

The project originates within the National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI), involving 12 Municipalities of the Molise Fortore area (Campolieto, Cercemaggiore, Gambatesa, Gildone, Jelsi, Macchia Valfortore, Monacilioni, Pietracatella, Riccia, Sant'Elia a Pianisi, Toro and Tufara) with the aim of enhancing an area rich in agricultural landscapes, local memories and traditional knowledgebut still fragile in terms of services and development.

The eco-museum was conceived as instrument of cohesion and revitalisation of local communities, through a participatory process combining research, training, cultural promotion and territorial marketing.
Financed by the POR FESR-FSE and POC Molise 2014/2020 funds, the project envisaged a series of integrated actions: the implementation of Community Maps, a digital archive of local heritage, one web platform, initiatives of communicationeducational activities and a network of cultural partnerships.
