Church of St Nicholas
The Church of San Nicola di Mira in Macchia Valfortore is an important religious structure located in the main square of the town. Built in the 18th century, the church is dedicated to St Nicholas, Bishop of Mira, known for his miracles and generosity.
The building has a simple but elegant architectural style, with a stone façade and a bell tower rising next to the main structure. Inside, the church contains several works of sacred art, including frescoes and statues depicting scenes from the life of St Nicholas.
During the Second World War, the church played a significant role in the local community, offering shelter to many people. Today, it continues to be an active place of worship and a landmark for residents and visitors to Macchia Valfortore.
Old Mill
Belvedere of Macchia Valfortore
Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption
The chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption, or 'cappella a llong' in dialect, is located on the summit of a hill. From the chapel, it is possible to see a good part of the Fortore valley.
The chapel was completely restored both inside and out, the plaster was removed bringing back the old stones, the wooden roof supported by three trusses was redone. On the right side as one enters, a stone altar was built for the celebration of Holy Mass. A fountain was built beside the chapel by local volunteers.
Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels is called the 'chapel a cort' in dialect because it is located before the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption following the same road, thus being closer to the village. The portal of the chapel, based on its Gothic stylistic data, is dated 1300, but could be even older.
Church of St. Michael
The church dates back to the end of the 18th century, and the altar features decorative elements typical of the period; identical altars can be found in both the church of St. Nicholas and the rural chapel of St. Mary of the Angels. Located in the immediate vicinity of the cemetery, built in 1841, it has undergone several renovations over the centuries.
Cavatelli Festival
The Sagra dei Cavatelli di Macchia Valfortore is celebrated in August.
Feast of St Nicholas
The Feast of St Nicholas Bishop of Myra in Macchia Valfortore is celebrated every year on 6 December.
St Nicholas is the patron saint of the village and the festival is a moment of great devotion and participation for the local community. During the celebration, a procession is held in which the statue of the saint is carried through the streets of the village, accompanied by prayers and songs.
