Gildone
Gildone Map

Small and charming, Gildone is set in a hilly landscape that tells centuries of agricultural history. The village retains a compact urban layout, with narrow streets and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Religious and gastronomic traditions are still very much alive, and the bond with the land is strong and authentic. Gildone is also known for the migratory flows to Canada and the United States, which have left important cultural marks in the collective memory.

  • Piazza Vittorio and the Church of San Rocco

Piazza Largo Vittorio is the main meeting point in Gildone, a small hill town in the province of Campobasso. The square houses the war memorial and is animated by the presence of bars and businesses. The town's main fairs and festivals are held here, such as the Feast of San Sabino (1 August), 'A Madonn Annascus' (21 November) and San Francesco Saverio (3 December). It is the heart of Gildone's social life, often the scene of events and shows organised by the local Pro Loco.

The Church of San Rocco in Gildone, located in Via Municipio, is a 16th-century rectangular building with a double nave and cross vaults, characterised by a plastered and frescoed façade. The front has two levels with twin portals and, in the upper part, a small bell gable. The façade itself is decorated with frescoes, an element that distinguishes it and makes it a landmark for the community.

  • Mother Church

The Church of San Sabino in Gildone is the town's parish church, of ancient origins and restored in 1690. It has a basilica plan with three naves and a façade with historical portals, including an ancient medieval portal. San Sabino is the patron saint of Gildone and his feast day is celebrated every year on 1 August with a solemn procession through the streets of the village, which is very popular with the community.

  • Church of Santa Maria a Quadrano

The chapel of Santa Maria a Quadrano, located in the former feud of Quadrano about 4 km from the centre of Gildone, is a religious building of ancient origins, founded by the Benedictines in the 11th century and renovated in 1721-1722 thanks to the devotion of local citizens. Also known as Santa Maria dell'Assunta, the small church is immersed in the Molise countryside and represents an important place of worship and tradition for the Gildone community.

  • Route of the Via Micaelica

The Via Micaelica route through Gildone is part of the Via Micaelica Molisana, an itinerary connecting Bojano to Monte Sant'Angelo. Starting from Bojano, the route goes through Gildone, passing by Jelsi, Gambatesa and other towns in Molise, and then continues in Apulia through Torremaggiore, San Severo and reaches the Sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo.

  • Bread Festival

On the feast of San Sabino, the traditional Festa del Pane (Bread Festival) also takes place, a popular event celebrating the production of homemade bread, a symbol of sharing and local identity. The festival attracts numerous citizens and visitors, enlivening the town with moments of music, food and folklore.

  • Feast of Our Lady of Grace

The feast of Our Lady of Grace is celebrated on 5 August.

  • Sagra del peperone fritto

Every year, on 15 August, the feast in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption is celebrated at the chapel of Santa Maria a Quadrano with solemn masses. At the same time, the traditional 'Devotion of the Peppers' takes place, a centuries-old food and wine event in which green peppers (friarielli) are the protagonists, accompanied by moments of conviviality and popular celebration. This festival attracts believers and visitors from all over the area and is one of the most heartfelt events of the Gildonese summer.
